Building a gaming PC is one of the most satisfying purchases in PC gaming — but it's also one of the most commonly botched ones. Mismatched components, underspecced PSUs, and overbuying in the wrong area are all avoidable mistakes once you understand how the parts work together.
Start With Your Target: Resolution + Frame Rate
Before selecting any component, decide what you're trying to achieve. 1080p 60fps, 1440p 144fps, and 4K 60fps are completely different performance targets that require completely different hardware budgets. Everything flows from this decision.
GPU: The Most Important Component for Gaming
The GPU renders every frame. For pure gaming, this is where most of your budget should go. A general guide: allocate 35-40% of your total build budget to the GPU. Anything that's left over can go toward CPU, RAM, storage, and the case.
- 1080p 144fps target: Mid-range GPU (e.g., RTX 4060 Ti / RX 7700 XT tier)
- 1440p 144fps target: High mid-range GPU (e.g., RTX 4070 Super / RX 7800 XT tier)

CPU: Match It to Your GPU
A good rule of thumb: your CPU should not cost more than your GPU for a gaming-focused build. Modern mid-range CPUs (Ryzen 7 / Core i7 tier) will not bottleneck even high-end GPUs at 1440p and above. Spending extra on a premium CPU makes sense mainly if you also do streaming, video editing, or 3D work.
RAM: Speed and Capacity Both Matter
For gaming in 2025, 32GB of DDR5 (or fast DDR4 on older platforms) is the comfortable minimum. 16GB is enough for most games today but leaves little headroom for background tasks. RAM speed (MHz) matters more for AMD Ryzen platforms than Intel, but faster RAM is generally a cheap upgrade worth doing.
Storage: NVMe SSD for Everything
Load times aside, modern games increasingly stream assets from storage during gameplay. An NVMe SSD (PCIe Gen 4 preferred) is worth using for your OS and primary games. A secondary HDD or SATA SSD can store games you play less frequently.
PSU: Don't Underspec This
Power supply is the most commonly underspecced component. A modern high-end GPU can draw 300-450W at peak, and transient spikes can exceed rated TDP by 30-50% for milliseconds. Always buy at least 650W for a mid-range build, 750-850W for a high-end GPU, and 1000W+ for flagship cards. Stick to reputable brands: Corsair, Seasonic, be quiet!, EVGA. A bad PSU can damage every component it's connected to.
Calculate your system's total power draw before buying a PSU — add CPU TDP + GPU TDP + ~100W for the rest of the system, then add a 20-30% safety margin. A PSU running at 70-80% capacity runs cooler and lasts longer than one running at 95%.
